Meet Our Team: Carmen Wilson-George
1. What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Caring, brave and logical.
2. How would you describe your day job to a child?
I am the person who will help you understand yourself better and teach you skills to build your team stronger so that the company makes lots of money and our investors keep smiling!
3. Why did you choose to be part of the Vector Logistics’ team?
The Vector story inspired me to want to be part of building the new legacy. Also, it’s a no brainer that Vector is the leading powerhouse in delivering world-class logistics and expertise across Southern Africa, not only South Africa.
4. What excites you about this role?
My role affords me the opportunity to create a cutting-edge learning and development function from the ground up, and that fuels my passion. This role empowers me to design top-notch programmes that support the growth of our Vectorians at every level. Additionally, I am committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to ensure all our staff feel heard and included, while also supporting our various change initiatives that supports the business growth strategy
5. How would you describe a high-performance organisation?
High-performing organisations (HPO) are those organisations who consistently achieve outstanding results and sustained performance through high levels of employee engagement, innovation, customer satisfaction and adaptability. These organisations often have leaders who are visionary and inspire employees to perform at their best with high levels of psychological safety and accountability.
6. How do you keep yourself/your team motivated?
In a world where things can often feel overwhelming and complex, it’s crucial to focus on what is within our circle of control. By doing so, and by consistently reminding ourselves “to be kind to ourselves”, enables us to navigate challenges more effectively. We can often be our own harshest critics, so self-compassion is key.
7. Do you have a mentor/coach?
Not currently, but I did have a mentor before and would highly recommend it. I found that my mentor always held the mirror up for me and helped me to see things differently by testing the boundaries and stretching me out of my comfort zone.
8. Given a chance, who would you like to be for a day?
Mother Theresa. I would love to serve the needy with compassion, humility and grace as she did. She truly had a heart for people, which is something that is close to my heart (guess that is why I work in HR, hee … hee).
9. If you were the CEO for a day, what would you change or introduce?
Arrange a “Recognition Day” as we seldom celebrate individual, and team wins, as we are in the grind all the time.
RESULT: Boost employee engagement and drive higher levels of productivity.
On a lighter note …
10. What is your most memorable facepalm (embarrassing) moment?
Running into someone I had trained many years ago and not remembering their name when they were overexcited to see me at a restaurant.
11. When was the last time you laughed so hard?
Every time I watch a repeat of my favourite Trevor Noah standup comedy show “Pay Back the Funny”.
12. What is your guilty pleasure?
Frozen cheesecake (the triangle one).
13. What is one thing people do not know about you?
Most passionate Manchester United Soccer fan.
14. If you could invite one famous person (dead or alive) to dinner, who would it be and why?
