Victor Goes the Distance to Make an Impact

1. What inspired you to run this marathon in support of this cause?
I was inspired by my late mom, who was a teacher and dedicated her life to uplifting others through education, and my late sister, who gave back to the community through her non-profit work. Their unwavering dedication to help others sparked a desire in me to honour their legacy by supporting a cause that helps children with cognitive autism and Down’s syndrome in our village, ensuring they receive the care and resources they deserve.

2. Can you tell us a bit more about the cause you are raising awareness for and why it is important to you?
The cause I am supporting is a children’s care centre in my home village that provides specialised care and support to children with cognitive autism and Down’s syndrome. This centre serves a disadvantaged community in Pampierstad in the Northern Cape, where such resources are scarce. Growing up in the village, I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by families with limited access to care. This initiative is close to my heart because it provides hope and opportunities to children who might otherwise be left behind.

3. How do you balance the physical demands of training for a marathon and work?
Balancing training and work have been challenging, but I have made it a priority by structuring my schedule and setting clear goals. Early morning runs and weekend long runs help me stay on track without compromising my professional responsibilities. The purpose behind this marathon – helping children in need – fuels my determination and keeps me focused even on the busiest days. Additionally, I enjoy running because it also helps me with my mental health and gives me the strength needed to manage a productive and fulfilling work-life balance.

4. What firsthand experiences or stories have motivated you to take on this challenge?
My mother’s commitment to education and my sister’s dedication to giving back to our community have profoundly shaped me. Watching their selflessness taught me the importance of serving others. Additionally, hearing stories from families in the village who benefit from the care centre’s services has made this cause deeply personal and inspiring for me.

5. How has your training journey been so far? Have there been any unexpected challenges?
The journey has been transformative but not without its hurdles. Adjusting to the physical demands of marathon training has been a steep learning curve. Unexpected challenges like fatigue, minor injuries, and the occasional self-doubt have assessed my resilience and faith. However, the support from my wife and reminders of the cause keep me moving forward. This journey has also deepened my faith.

6. What role do you think events like this marathon can play in creating a greater sense of community or social impact?
Events like this marathon bring people together with a shared purpose, uniting individuals across diverse backgrounds to make a tangible difference. They raise awareness about critical issues and inspire others to act. I believe such events can create a ripple effect, encouraging communities to rally around causes that matter. “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

7. How are you spreading awareness about this cause as you prepare for the race?
I have been sharing my journey through social media and local events, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of training while shedding light on the importance of supporting children with autism and Down’s syndrome. I am also collaborating with the care centre to highlight the impact they have made in the community and encourage others to contribute.

8. Are there any specific goals you hope to achieve both during the marathon and for the cause you are supporting?
For the marathon, my goal is to cross the finish line and demonstrate what is possible when we dedicate ourselves to a purpose bigger than ourselves. For the cause, I aim to raise significant funds to support the care centre’s programmes and spread awareness about the importance of providing care and education for children with autism and Down’s syndrome.

9. What kind of support are you receiving from others – whether it is from family, friends, or organisations involved with the cause?
I am fortunate to have a dedicated support system. Friends and family have been encouraging throughout my training, and the care centre has provided stories of the children they serve to keep me connected to the cause. The local community has also shown incredible generosity, with financial pledges and encouragement.

10. What message do you hope to send to others who might be considering running a marathon for a cause they care about?
Running a marathon for a cause is more than a physical challenge – it is a journey of purpose and resilience. If you are enthusiastic about something, channel that energy into action. It does not matter if you are an experienced runner or a beginner; what counts is your commitment to making a difference.

11. Can you share any memorable moments from your fundraising efforts so far?
One memorable moment was when a local family from the village shared how the care centre has transformed their child’s life. Hearing their gratitude reinforced why this cause matters so much.

12. How can people continue to get involved with or support the cause after the marathon is over?
People can continue to support the care centre by donating, volunteering their time, or helping spread awareness about its work. Additionally, advocating for greater inclusion and resources for children with autism and Down’s syndrome can create a lasting impact.

13. How do you stay motivated during the tough moments of training, and how do you keep that motivation tied to the cause you are supporting?
During tough moments, I remind myself why I started this journey – to honour my mom and sister’s legacy and to support children who need it the most. Thinking about the families benefiting from the care centre gives me strength. Running is no longer about me; it is about making a difference.

14. What advice would you give to others who want to combine their passion for fitness with supporting a cause they believe in?
Start with a cause that deeply resonates with you and let that be your driving force. Set clear goals, share your journey to inspire others, and do not be afraid to ask for support. The combination of fitness and philanthropy is incredibly fulfilling – it transforms not just your life, but also the lives of those you are helping.
